With ref to your first italicised paragraph, I had precisely the same problem with my thesis; there's just so much out there to read. My supervisor had a real job convincing me that it was time to stop reading and concentrate on the writing. After all, past a certain point, although you're reading 'new' sources, they're really just rehashing or commenting on the core 100 or so you've spent the last 6 months finding and taking notes on!
